LSM Field Guide

What is Larval Source Management (LSM)?

LSM is the management of water-holding bodies that are potential habitats for mosquito larvae to prevent completion of their development. By eliminating standing water or introducing controls, we prevent vectors (Aedes aegypti) from transmitting Dengue, Zika, and Chikungunya.

Mosquito Breeding Breeding Risks

HIGH RISK

Full + Untreated

Containers filled with water (>50%) with no lid, chemical, or biological treatment are highly attractive to egg-laying mosquitoes.

MEDIUM RISK

Damp / Partial Full

Containers containing small pockets of water (25%-50%) or damp soil/debris. Mosquito eggs can survive on dry surfaces for months and hatch when wet.

LOW RISK

Covered / Cleaned

Containers kept dry, sealed tightly, scrubbed weekly, or containing larvivorous fish or chemical agents (Temephos).

Effective Control Methods

🐟 Larvivorous Fish

Guppies or other small species introduced to large containers consume larvae instantly. Excellent biological control.

🧹 Weekly Cleaning (Scrubbing)

Just draining is not enough! Eggs stick firmly to the inner walls of containers. You must scrub the interior surfaces thoroughly to remove them.

πŸ§ͺ Temephos (Abate Sand)

An organophosphate larvicide added in safe doses. Extremely effective for non-potable domestic water containers.

πŸ”’ Airtight Lids

Mesh screen covers or tight plastic lids completely block mosquitoes from accessing the water surface to lay eggs.
